Got a Tip?

Cable Rumored For ‘Deadpool 2,’ Writers Tease More X-Men In The Future

Deadpool"Deadpool" is looking like it’ll be a big smash hit this weekend, to the point that 20th Century Fox has already greenlit a sequel. And while the movie is positioned as the anti-superhero movie that stands apart from the crowd, there’s a strong part of it that wants to be part of the X-Men world, and the screenwriters of "Deadpool" and the sequel, Rhett Reese and Paul Werick, suggest as much in their chat with Yahoo.

"We haven’t seen ‘X-Men: Apocalypse.’ We don’t know what’s coming. [Simon Kinberg] knows what’s coming, and he also knows what’s the plan after ‘Apocalypse.’ It’s much easier for us to figure out how to plug X-Men into Deadpool’s universe than to figure out how to plug Deadpool into other universes. And that will be something that probably collectively, if we succeed, we’ll all come together on," Reese said. Clearly, there’s some desire there for X-Men to eventually jump into the bigger framework.

That said, it’s likely a few movies away, given that the ‘Apocalypse’ timeline is back in the 1980s. But that doesn’t mean more mutants can’t be rolled in, and Comic Book is hearing that X-Men character Cable will be featured in "Deadpool 2." And even director Tim Miller himself stated back at last year’s Comic-Con, it was a character that was a near certainty if a sequel got made.

“I went through the list of Marvel characters and picked a few others I thought could be visually spectacular and fun. And at the end of that list was Negasonic, which I just thought was a freaky, funny name. And I sent this list over to the writers, Rhett and Paul, and they were like, ‘Oh my fucking god, we have to use her!’ So that’s how she ended up in the movie. Her name was cool, and we kind of wanted a straight-man to play against Colossus. We thought about Cannonball, but he would’ve been a stupid hick character, whereas the guys wrote Negasonic as this deadpan goth teen, which was a great angle. She turned out really well," he said (via Screenrant). "There aren’t really many definitive Deadpool villains, apart from Cable. If we don’t put Cable in ‘Deadpool 2’ I think we’ll be run out of town on a rail."

The other thing about Cable is that the character can help get to that X-Force movie Ryan Reynolds is keen on.

Comics fans, do you like the path they’re going down? Let us know. "Deadpool" opens tomorrow.
