With all the discussion surrounding films that have been subject to delays, such as “No Time To Die,” “Tenet,” “Wonder Woman 1984,” “Black Widow,” and so many more, it’s easy to forget that COVID-19 caused a premature end to the theatrical runs of so many films that were released shortly before all the cinemas shut down in March. One of those films is the Sony Pictures Classics release, “The Burnt Orange Heresy,” which began its select theatrical run just days before the pandemic shut everything down. Now, months later, Sony is going to try it again and release the film in theaters to see if there’s a second chance for Giuseppe Capotondi’s drama.
As seen in the new trailer for “The Burnt Orange Heresy,” the film is now scheduled to return to theaters on August 7. This comes after the film was originally released on March 6, marking a five-month delay between releases. Whereas so many of the films released in February and March were rushed to VOD and eventually Blu-ray, Sony has kept ‘Burnt Orange’ away from that and held steady with its desire for a theatrical release.
The film follows the story of an art critic and his lover who are commissioned by a powerful art collector to steal a famous painting from a reclusive artist. Elizabeth Debicki, Claes Bang, Mick Jagger, and Donald Sutherland star in the feature.
We reviewed the film after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. In our review, we said, “[Screenwriter] Scott B. Smith’s adaptation of the 1971 Charles Williford novel of the same name plays like a cool, classy ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ for the art-obsessive, every trace of camp traded for poetry.”
As mentioned, “The Burnt Orange Heresy” returns to theaters on August 7. Hopefully, this time the film is able to get the full theatrical run it warrants.
