Bryan Singer has attached himself to direct yet another new project, which was announced today via THR’s Heatvision blog- “Jack the Giant Killer,” a fantasy adventure produced by New Line and Legendary Pictures. We speculated about this project a month ago, when Singer added the “Excalibur” remake to his plate. The script is by Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard, Race to Witch Mountain), and Darren Lemke (some movie called Lost with Dean Cain, the upcoming Shrek 3D retread) and centers around a war between giants and humans set off by the kidnapping of a princess, and the young farmer who sets off to the giant kingdom on a rescue mission. Uhh ok? So “Lord of the Rings” meets “The Princess Bride” in an updated version of “Jack and the Beanstalk”? Is it for kids? Adults? Nerds?
Singer’s been taking a time out since 2008’s “
Valkyrie,” but hasn’t slowed down in attaching himself to upcoming projects. In addition to the King Arthur-centered “
Excalibur” (a remake of the 1981 John Boorman flick) with Legendary and Warners, he’s also
got his name on the feature version of “
Battlestar Galactica” at Universal. And there’s been talk of Singer returning to the X-Men franchise he launched, with “
X-Men: First Class.” That project is apparently
shooting soon, but that information is from an actor’s Tweets, so make of it what you will.
“Jack” is apparently being fast-tracked, and Heatvision says it will be Singer’s next movie, though who knows what will happen with scheduling these two other monster projects. We kinda wish Singer would stay in the realm of more original dramas, like “The Usual Suspects,” and “Valkyrie,” as flawed as the latter might be. But he seems to be loading up with more action-y, CGI-stuffed, fan boy reboots of old properties. Guess a dude’s gotta get paid, but really Bryan, you pretty much have carte blanche in Hollywood (despite “Superman Returns”)- fantasy adventure Jack and the Beanstalk? Really?
