Bryan Lee O’Malley Defends Choice Of Michael Cera As ‘Scott Pilgrim’

So much for that day off, huh? Edgar Wright’s myspace page continues to pump out photo after photo of “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” actors either in costume or holding up pictures of their characters. Today is Michael Cera’s first real appearance (though there was one hidden, blurry shot last week).

Chud talked to ‘Pilgrim’ creator Bryan Lee O’Malley recently and while there’s no real details in their report (yet, more is coming), the author did defend the casting of Michael Cera as Scott Pilgrim. A casting move that some saw as too ineffectual — Cera being too introverted and Pilgrim being too hyperbolic and emo. Though apparently the complaint O’Malley has heard is: not big enough star or not being heroic enough (who would honestly think that??)

“People have really different ideas of what Scott is like. A lot of people see Scott as being really, really cool and really handsome… and I don’t know about that. There was a good quote on the CHUD forum the other day where somebody was taking these people to task. He said, ‘Scott is a guy who cries when his roommate saves over his Final Fantasy game – you don’t think his voice cracks from time to time?’ Me and Edgar and Michael [Bacall] the writer, we don’t see Scott as being a hero-like idol. We don’t see him as Zac Efron or whatever. Nobody ever suggested anybody else to play Scott. I think Michael Cera is going to do a fucking awesome job.”

We had our initial reservations about Cera as well, but then we reminded ourselves of his role in the Internet-only webshorts show, “Clark and Michael,” which depicted Cera as a more proactive, whiner and louder version than we’re usually used to. Dial that up a little bit and he’s perfect for Pilgrim.
