With the lines between TV and film continuing to blur, it’s only a matter of time until we’re awarding Best Narrative Of The Year instead of trying to continue to separate the mediums. And indeed, the esteemed Cahiers Du Cinema aren’t making the distinction with their top ten films of 2014.
Bruno Dumont‘s acclaimed miniseries "P’tit Quinquin" has topped this year’s list. And as you might expect, the esteemed mag favors the arthouse and the auteur, over anything studio driven. So that’s why you’ll see Jean-Luc Godard‘s "Goodbye To Language," David Cronenberg‘s "Maps To The Stars," Hong Sang-soo‘s "Our Sunhi," and Jonathan Glazer‘s "Under The Skin" on the list. There are some surprises too with Ira Sachs‘ "Love Is Strange" making cut and same with young gun Xavier Dolan with "Mommy."
Here’s the full ten. Debate and discuss below. [Fandor]
Cahiers Du Cinema Top 10 Films Of 2014
1. Bruno Dumont‘s Li’l Quinquin.
2. Jean-Luc Godard‘s Goodbye to Language.
3. Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin.
4. David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars.
5. Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises.
6. Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac.
7. Xavier Dolan‘s Mommy.
8. Ira Sachs‘s Love Is Strange.
9. Alain Cavalier‘s Le Paradis.
10. Hong Sang-soo‘s Our Sunhi.
Be honest. Under the Skin was pretty bad, esteemed only by those that think The Tree of Life is actually a film.
The director\’s cut of Nymphomaniac deserves to be in the year\’s top ten. Maps to the Stars has a shot of achieving Crash-like status in years to come. Not for everybody, but I could see it being one of those Cronenbergs that really catches on.
Under the Skin is overrated Maps to the Stars is unwatchable Nymphomaniac is a masterpiece and Love Is Strange is gay propaganda
I have no words for anyone who believes Nymphomaniac to be one of the best films of this or any other year. Auteurism is a brain disease, a tic–not a sound critical position. Because when an auteur falls hard, for whatever reason, as Von Trier has fallen for the first time in this listless and pointless movie, the auteurist will cheer even louder. It\’s a kind of sports fandom approach to films…
Jean-Luc Godard‘s Goodbye to Language???????
Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac????????
Xavier Dolan‘s Mommy?????????????
ARE YOU NUTS?????? COME ON, PEOPLE!!!
great to see our sunhi and maps to the stars in a end of year list.
Bruno "Bru" Dumont is my biatch.
Really, "24" ten years ago? I applaud their openness, but couldn\’t they have picked a show that was actually good?
Much love to The Wind Rises, probably the best film I\’ve seen this year.
nymphomaniac and maps to the stars? ouch. glad to see under the skin getting some award/best of recognition, though,as it was easily the year\’s best sci-fi. i have never understood the appeal of miyazaki\’s animations, but that\’s neither here nor there. just not my thing.
I just want to point out that Ptit Quinquin also came out on the big screen here in France, at the same time as being on television 🙂
and it\’s not the first time the Cahiers included TV in their top, in fact ten years ago they included the first season of 24 in there
Robert Downey Jr. is looking OLD.
Bruno "Bru" Dumont is my biatch.
