Soundtrack Arrives Early On May 10, Score By Michael Andrews
Highly anticipated to some of us (this writer) and old awesome news to the Playlist folks that were at SXSW last month, Paul Feig‘s “Bridesmaids” starring Kristen Wiig looks and sounds awesome. Our SXSW reviewer called it “hilarious and heartfelt,” and a lot of internal chatter has been saying it’s the best Judd Apatow-produced film since “Knocked Up” in its balance of rude comedy, heart and even (yes), moments of social realism. No really, in our 7 Best Films of SXSW recap we wrote, “the film has a heart and soul, and even touches upon some Mike Leigh-like class issues in its surprisingly weighty story.”
Now the soundtrack details have arrived and they, too, look pretty good. As we already know, Michael Andrews composed the score and he’ll always be in our good books for writing the fantastic, dreamy music to Miranda July‘s debut, “Me and You and Everyone We Know.” He’s fallen in with the Apatow crowd of late, having scored “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” and “Funny People” (which Jason Schwartzman partly scored as well). Plus, he wrote the music for “Cyrus” (the score was excellent, it’s a bit criminal no disc was released) and he’s also composing the music to “Bad Teacher,” which is just another reason to anticipate that flick. The 13-song disc includes tracks by Playlist faves Fiona Apple and Inara George (George did all the wordless vocals for the Andrews music in the aforementioned July film and she rules on her own too), a cover of the Violent Femmes classic “Blister In the Sun” (by Nouvelle Vague), ’90s faves Hole, two takes on the same Blondie song and some straight up musical irony too (Wilson Phillips). “Bridesmaids” hits theaters May 13. The soundtrack is due on May 10.

I personally was super-stoked when I heard the first few notes of Paper Bag while watching this movie. I immediately began singing along and then realized I was in the theater. I\’ve been a fan of Apple\’s since she debuted with Tidal in the 90s and Paper Bag has always been one of my most favorite songs by her. Definitely nice to hear it showcased in this way.
Oh, okay, cool. Yeah, that\’s true, it wasn\’t really featured in \’Last Kiss.\’ I\’m looking forward to \’Bridesmaids\’ a lot, so that\’s a nice bonus.
\”Paper Bag\” is barely used in that film. Soundtrack/Fiona aficionado\’s will be happy to see this song finally get its proper due in this film (great song, good use of it in the film too, both the Inara and Apple song get great placement).
Really cool soundtrack, but I must say as a Fiona Apple aficionado, Paper Bag was on the Last Kiss soundtrack. Not that you can\’t re-use songs on different soundtracks, but I was just a little bummed when I saw it there. She\’s got a lot of other great songs.
Not that anybody cares about stepping on the toes of the Last Kiss soundtrack, either. People hate on Zach Braff now for some reason, but homeboy put together very pleasant/sometimes depressing soundtracks.
