Got a Tip?

Brian De Palma’s Terrorist Thriller ‘Domino’ Finally Gets A Release Date After A Long, Troubled Production

The release date announcement of a film that is going to select theaters and VOD on the same day isn’t normally something we devote an entire article to. However, when you talk about the long-awaited film “Domino” from filmmaker Brian De Palma, it’s worth bringing up. You see, this is a film that has been the source of controversy, with the filmmaker effectively washing his hands clean of the production.

For those that aren’t familiar, “Domino” is a thriller about a police officer that is on the hunt for the ISIS member that killed his partner. The plot seems very intriguing and actually fits quite well in the filmography of De Palma, who is probably best known for his films like “Carrie,” “Scarface,” and “The Untouchables,” among many, many others. However, it’s the behind-the-scenes drama that makes “Domino” so interesting.

“‘Domino’ is not my project, I did not write the script,” the filmmaker said in a recent interview.

He added, “I had a lot of problems in financing [‘Domino’]. I never experienced such a horrible movie set. A large part of our team has not even been paid yet by the Danish producers. The film is finished and ready to go out, but I have no idea what its future will hold, it is currently in the hands of the producers. This was my first experience in Denmark and most likely my last.”

We’re not exactly sure what version of “Domino” will be released. Is this the film that De Palma worked on and finished, thus his de facto director’s cut? Or is this the version that the filmmaker washed his hands of, handed to producers, and doesn’t recognize as something he is proud of? Luckily, we don’t have to wait too long to find out.

The film stars Nicolaj Coster-Waldau, Carice van Houten, and Guy Pearce.

“Domino” will hit theaters and VOD, courtesy of Saban Films, on May 31.

Here’s the synopsis:

In a world wracked by terror and suspicion, Copenhagen police officer, Christian (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), seeks justice for his partner’s murder by an ISIS member named Imran. On the hunt for the killer, Christian and a fellow cop are unwittingly caught in a cat and mouse chase with a duplicitous CIA agent (Guy Pearce) who is using Imran as a pawn to trap other ISIS members. Soon Christian is racing against the clock – not only seeking revenge, but to save his own life.
