Got a Tip?

Box Office: ‘Zootopia’ Back On Top, ’10 Cloverfield Lane’ Opens Strong, ‘Brothers Grimsby’ Gutted

ZootopiaThe weather is getting warmer and it seems families are eager to get out of the house and into the multiplex. For the second straight week, Disney‘s "Zootopia" kept a commanding hold at the top of the box office. The animated picture earned a huge $50 million, bringing its domestic total after two weekends to $142.6 million. Overseas, the movie is continuing to do huge business too, pocketing $109 million this weekend, bringing total global haul to $431.3 million, with the movie now on pace to do a staggering $900 million worldwide. Damn.

While it didn’t take the top spot, Paramount is likely plenty pleased with the second place debut of "10 Cloverfield Lane." The studio conservatively estimated a mid-teens opening for the movie, and saw the well-reviewed thriller take in $25.2 million this weekend. That’s well behind the $40 million opening of "Cloverfield" in 2008, but that film’s viral marketing campaign was somewhat unprecedented at the time. This picture also only had two months of lead-in marketing, with the sell entirely hinging on the mystery at the core, so Paramount really couldn’t have asked for a better launch. However, the movie may not have the longest of legs. "Cloverfield" dropped 68% from week one to week two, and I’d expect ‘Lane’ to have a similar fall off.

Over at Sony, the studio saw a grim opening for Sacha Baron Cohen‘s "The Brothers Grimsby." The comedy opened to a dismal $3.1 million, a far cry from the $26 million opening of "Borat," the $30 million debut of "Bruno," and even the $17 million launch of "The Dictator." In fact, ‘Grimsby’ will likely finish its run with just $8 million total. It’s the first huge flop of Cohen’s career, but let’s hope he recovers soon.

Two other movies opened this weekend, but you might not have been aware given they pretty much flew below the radar. Lionsgate‘s rom-com "The Perfect Match" took in a modest $4.1 million on less than 1,000 screens, while Focus Features‘ tale of Jesus as a little kid, "The Young Messiah," earned $3.4 million in wide release, and will likely play to the faith-based crowd before drifting away from cinemas.

Remember "Gods Of Egypt"? While that movie is on its way out of the top ten in North America, the picture opened in China this weekend to a very good $20 million, bringing its international total to $80.5 million, which takes some of the sting out of the film’s $27 million domestic run so far. Meanwhile, A24‘s "The Witch" has now earned $22 million across four weekends, which puts it in spitting distance of the studio’s best performing movie ever. "Ex Machina" currently holds that distinction with $25.4 million (it took twenty-one weekends to get there), so if the arthouse horror can hang on for a few more weeks, it should challenge the sci-fi pic for A24’s champion status.

In limited release, Terrence Malick‘s "Knight Of Cups" added 32 screens, saw a 48% boost in business, and took in $90,135. Elsewhere, "Eye In The Sky" opened on five screens with $117,050, "Hello, My Name Is Doris" took $85,240 across four screens, and Atom Egoyan‘s "Remember" earned $20,000 in two cinemas.
