Whether you are a fan of the DCEU, or just an observer, you’d be hard pressed to miss the various ways “Justice League“ couldn’t find the success it was aiming for at the box office last weekend. Released roughly a week ago, “Justice League” couldn’t crack the $100 million mark in its debut; a worrisome sign for a blockbuster that cost $300 million and is supposed to be DC’s “The Avengers.” The reasons for this shortfall are plenty.

With critically based theories, negative pre-press, and behind the scenes goings-on, a video essay by Looper dissects the likely possibilities for “Justice League”‘s harsh debut showing. One of the more obvious reasons is the fast growth of the expansive superhero film universe. Marvel’s latest success, “Thor: Ragnarok” not only was a box office juggernaut (and still is), but also garnered favorable reviews and was touted upon release as the best reviewed Marvel film to date. Rotten Tomatoes found itself overshadowing any possible success “Justice League” might have boasted by withholding its critical rating. Early screeners for journos whose reviews focused on the film’s convoluted plot, also dissuaded audience retention rates found with DC’s more successful summer film “Wonder Woman.”

Beyond numbers and printed words, the structure of the film also made it extremely difficult to retain focus and offer audiences a distinct plotline. Unlike Marvel, which spent years producing solo films for its characters before bringing them together in “The Avengers,” “Justice League” spent time establishing characters Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash while also steering its patchy plot to follow the story line of “Dawn of Justice.” The competition between the DCEU and Marvel only made the former rush to release its ensemble epic.
Looper’s video essay unpacks a slew of reasons for the lack of enthusiasm surrounding “Justice League” so far. Any fan would love to see DC rise to the occasion as it so brilliantly did with “Wonder Woman,” on accounts of story, box office, reception, and pure entertainment. DC has all the potential, but needs to hone its power.

this is a good analysis, however I am constantly puzzled by the idea that characters need whole other movies to serve as introductions so that I can care about them. I can list a lot of movies with large casts that I care about all the characters and it only takes 2 hours of to make it happen.
Fool me once (MoS), shame on you. Fool me twice (BvS), shame on me. Fool me thrice (SS), fvck you! At least that’s my way of thinking. I will never pay for another DCEU movie in theaters again. I can easily wait for HBO, which is what I’m doing for both WW and JL. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels like this. Money is hard to come by these days and people probably want to save their $10-$15 on something other than a terribly choppy, pieced together, brooding, 2nd-rate CGI crapfest.
I am doing the same thing. I watched WW because of all critical praise and I was disappointed. This time I will just wait for JL.
so you are disappointed of WW ???
some don`t like MofS, others BvS…what is wrong with you people ?
There is nothing wrong with us, We just expect more from films. In WW, I was disappointed by generic plot.Crappy bad guy.Bad CGI and Bad Action sequences.
so, in which movie have you see better villains ?
perhaps Thor Ragnarok…
action sequences in MofS, BvS and JL are very good. don`t confuse with the plot ! I mean really, action sequences ! and again which movie ( comic book Movies ) has a good plot ?
Ragnarok’s villain was bland but still, she was way better then WW’s. Maybe you should see more action films if you think that action sequences of DCEU is any good. The only good action sequence is batman fight scene and nothing else. Logan, the lego batman movie, spiderman(I found spiderman to be an Ok film. I would give it 5 or 6/10) had better plot then WW.
how do you know is bad since you didn`t see it ?
how about wonder Woman ? who was a big succes… only because you read others?
I agree that BvS was a mess but Man of Steel ( not Superman ) was a hit.
Justice league is just too short for me. so I ca`nt wait to see the extended cut.
I never said it was bad, I said I won’t give DC another dollar to find out in theaters. And based off what I know with the reshoots and runtime, plus the introduction of 3 characters + 1 villain + return of Superman, it’s gonna be choppy and pieced together. Plus the trailers have shown nothing but 2nd-rate CGI. Once it’s available on HBO, then I’ll tell you how bad it is.
perhaps you should first wait until comes up on HBO and then write a comment ?
no matter the answer.
Perhaps. But by then no one will even remember this movie.
