Bobby Cannavale Joins Al Pacino & Robert De Niro In Martin Scorsese’s Gangster Picture ‘The Irishman’

It seems like Bobby Cannavale might be Martin Scorsese‘s new favorite actor. The great, underrated character actor won an Emmy for playing the merciless villain Gyp Rosetti on the third season of "Boardwalk Empire," which in turn got him the lead role in Scorsese and Terence Winter‘s next HBO project, the still-untitled drama set in the music industry in the early 1970s. But it sounds like Cannavale, who’ll next be seen in "Annie," "Spy" and "Ant-Man," will be working on a big-screen project with the filmmaker.

Al Pacino‘s doing the interview rounds at the Toronto International Film Festival, and The Daily Beast asked him about the status of "The Irishman," the long-gestating Martin Scorsese-directed gangster picture that would reteam Pacino with Robert De Niro, along with Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel. According to the star, the project’s still pushing forward, and the quartet of actors have been joined by Cannavale. There’s still no firm word on when the movie will be actually shooting, but Scorsese is finally getting "Silence" underway next year, so it’s unlikely to be before 2016 at the earliest.

In other casting news, Drew Barrymore and Toni Collette have signed on to play longtime friends in “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke’s new drama “Miss You Already.” Dominic Cooper and Paddy Considine are also signed to play their husbands. The film sees Barrymore’s character struggle to conceive, while Collette’s character discovers she has breast cancer, testing their relationship as they both wade through difficult times. [Variety]

Louis C.K. will continue to exercise his character actor chops after a solid turn in “American Hustle,” this time playing a blacklisted writer in the McCarthy era biopic of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. “Trumbo” will also star Bryan Cranston, Helen Mirren, and John Goodman. William Hurt and Alice Braga (“City of God,” “I Am Legend”) have joined the cast of "By Way of Helena," a revenge thriller about a mysterious Texas town plagued by murders and disappearances. They are cast alongside Liam Hemsworth, as a detective sent to investigate, and Woody Harrelson, as a preacher who seems to hold sway over the town’s population. [Variety]
