‘Blue Is The Warmest Color’ Director Changes His Mind, Says The Film Should Be Released After All

And so the back and forth continues between the director and stars of “Blue Is The Warmest Color,” whose constantly colorful quotes to the media threaten to overshadow the Palme d’Or-winning movie itself. But among the wilder words thrown around in the past few weeks came from the mouth of director Abedellatif Kechiche, who said the film shouldn’t be released because it has been “soiled too much.” But it appears he’s since calmed down a little bit.

“It was a remark that just came out when I had the feeling the film wasn’t going to be seen the way I thought it should be seen,” he told Indiewire, clarifying he really does want the movie to be released. “It was a remark that was blurted out at that moment, but it’s not what I really think…I was just afraid that was what was going on around the film would prevent people from seeing it for what it really was.”

And speaking of blurting out words at the moment, the director didn’t hesitate to again weigh in on the stars of his films, and in particular Léa Seydoux, whom he feels has people behind her pulling the strings. “With Léa Seydoux, it’s contradictory, because at Cannes she expressed so much joy and satisfaction from having worked on the film. Then there was this reversal with these other remarks, so I think she’s conflicted,” he said adding, “I think there are people around her that influenced her or even manipulated her,” he said. “It’s people who exact some sort of pleasure from undermining me or the film.”

As for Adèle Exarchopoulos? “I had a discussion with Adèle that made it clear she wasn’t really saying what it sounded like she was saying,” he stated.

Ultimately, it would seem everyone involved would benefit in taking the high road and no longer slinging mud at each other, but it’s become such a part of the narrative of this film that it’s unlikely to happen. There is probably much more to come as “Blue Is The Warmest Color” heads to theaters on October 25th.
