Not counting “Small Axe,” his excellent anthology series, Steve McQueen hasn’t made a feature film since 2018’s “Widows.” Thankfully, that’s about to change. Deadline reports that McQueen’s next film is “Blitz,” a film about the Blitz of London in World War II, with Saoirse Ronan leading the ensemble cast.

Along with Apple Original Films, “Blitz” reunites McQueen with New Regency Productions. McQueen’s first team-up with New Regency produced the 2013 Oscar winner “12 Years A Slave,” and worked with them again on “Widows.” New Regency developed and package “Blitz” as part of McQueen’s first-look deal with the company. He’ll write and produce the film on top of directing it.
McQueen’s most recent work has been documentaries for BBC and Amazon: “Black Power: A British Story Of Resistance,” “Subnormal: A British Scandal,” and “Uprising.” It’s another upcoming potential Awards Season movie for Apple, joining the likes of “Killers Of The Flower Moon” and “Emancipation.”
No word on who else will join Ronan on the “Blitz” ensemble yet, but expect a large cast given the movie’s episodic nature. Ronan’s recent work includes “The French Dispatch” and “See How They Run.” She just wrapped shooting on Garth Davis‘s “Foe” with Paul Mescal.
It’s great to see McQueen back in action with a new film. Expect “Blitz” to compete for big prizes at award shows in Winter 2024.
