‘Blade Runner 2049’: Watch The First Clip In A Dystopian Sweatshop

Now that “It” has arrived in theaters (our review) and audiences seem to be loving it, what’s the next genre movie of 2017 that audiences are heavily anticipating? No doubt, it’s Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner: 2049.” As we’ve noted in the past, Ridley Scott isn’t directing, but he did develop it and put the wheels in motion so he doesn’t at all seem reluctant, in his old age, to mess with his legacy given that he’s already returned to the “Alien” franchise (with mixed results however).

Two new pieces of “Blade Runner: 2049” marketing have arrived and they are characteristically keeping things vague. The very first clip from the movie has arrived and it’s very opaque. Ryan Gosling, the movie’s lead, is looking for… something. Whether that’s Harrison Ford’s Decker character at this point in the movie or not is unclear, but he comes across what looks like a children’s sweat shop run by “Walking Dead” actor Lennie James. But what’s the larger meaning of it all?  Unknown, but it continues to be dark, dystopian and very dank. Ryan Gosling appears to never clean his dirty face in the movie and it’s almost as if this choice is the modern version of Jack Nicholson wearing a bandage on his nose for half of “Chinatown.”

A new TV spot with new footage has arrived too, teasing the plot with Ford exclaiming, “We were being hunted,” likely referring to the Blade Runner officers who were chasing down the replicants in the first film. The tables have been turned apparently. Here’s the official synopsis:

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve (“Prisoners,” “Sicario”), “Blade Runner: 2049” was written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green; Fancher being the original writer of Scott’s 1982 movie.

On top of Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, the sci-fi thriller also features Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, the aforementioned Lennie James, Dave Bautista and Jared Leto as Jesus or something. “Blade Runner: 2049” opens in 3D and 2D in select theaters and IMAX on October 6^th.
