Got a Tip?

‘Birds Of Prey’ Rumored To Be Start Of Female-Centric Superhero Trilogy Continued In ‘Gotham City Sirens’

This week has been chock full of DC superhero film news, and surprisingly, most of it has been very positive. We’re used to hearing the latest about the DCEU and rolling our eyes or cringing. However, this week has given us hope that the folks over at Warner Bros. might be on the right path with their superhero flicks moving forward. And with the latest rumor surrounding “Birds of Prey,” we’re excited to see where things go in the future.

The big news yesterday is that James Gunn is likely directing “Suicide Squad (duh) and “The Batman” will not feature Ben Affleck, but instead a new actor under the cowl as he faces not one but a variety of villains. Now, this news led many film pundits to ponder what the future might look like for the DCEU. And buried deep in a report from THR is a rumor about “Birds of Prey” that hints at WB’s potential female-centric answer to “Captain America: Civil War.”

The report claims that “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” (as it’s officially known) is not going to be a one-and-done film. In fact, based on that’s film’s success the rumors are that WB is interested in making a thematic trilogy out of that film. After “Birds of Prey,” which is obviously destined to be a hit, the studio will next work on “Gotham City Sirens.” For those not familiar with ‘Sirens,’ this is the film that David Ayer was attempting to develop after “Suicide Squad,” and would feature some of Gotham’s most famous female characters, including Poison Ivy, Catwoman, and more. Many assumed that film was DOA thanks to ‘Birds,’ but apparently, that’s not the case at all.

In fact, based on those two films’ success, WB is rumored to end the “trilogy” with a ‘Birds vs. Sirens’ team-up film. Obviously, there’s still a whole lot of ifs and maybes to get through before this becomes a reality. However, this has all the makings of a massive success like the aforementioned ‘Civil War,’ which saw Marvel pitting its own heroes against each other. Not only that, it would help flesh out the Rogues Gallery of Batman, which can cross over into that film series (or the still-in-development Batman spin-offs, “Batgirl” and “Nightwing”).

Now, we don’t want to put the cart before the horse, as that’s exactly the type of thinking that put WB in the position it finds itself in today, with creative failures derailing very well thought out plans (Snyder’s “Justice League” anyone?). But with the momentum of “Wonder Woman” and “Aquaman,” combined with “Shazam” buzz and excitement over “Joker” and “Birds of Prey,” we’re cautiously optimistic that maybe Warner Bros. has its head on straight now.
