The struggle has been real for those at Warner Bros./DC Films, as their films have never been able to replicate the massive success that their rivals Marvel have been able to do over the past decade. However after the release of “Joker,” things may be looking up for the crazier side of the DC universe. And that’s where “Birds Of Prey” fits in.
Directed by Cathy Yan (“Dead Pigs”), the film will focus on Harley Quinn, played by Margot Robbie, after splitting up from Joker in the aftermath of “Suicide Squad.” We will see how Quinn adapts to becoming the hero (again) as she joins forces with Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez).
This will be Robbie’s second appearance as Quinn, having starred in the critically-panned (but highly profitable) “Suicide Squad.” Speaking to TotalFilm magazine, writer Christina Hodson spoke about the story, saying “It’s not a traditional team-up. So then it was about finding fun, inventive ways of doing that. Warners were very supportive in terms of letting me go off-leash.”
It seems that this film has been given the freedom to be creative, and Winstead even commented to TotalFilm, “You can expect something really fun and a bit wild and totally unique. Every day we were there, we were doing something that just felt really weird and unlike anything else I’ve seen before in this genre. It was incredibly exciting to get to do that. We really got to work. We just played, and we had fun.” This looks like a team-up we won’t certainly want to miss.
The villain will be Black Mask, an evil crime lord played by Ewan McGregor, it’ll be interesting to see the Scottish actors take on the sadistic Gotham crime lord who has an obsession with masks and torture. As well as Robbie and McGregor, the film will also star Bojana Novakovic (“Devil”), Chris Messina (“Argo”), and Matthew Willig (“3 From Hell”).
Here is the synopsis:
After splitting with the Joker, Harley Quinn joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord, Black Mask in Gotham City.
