Got a Tip?

Bill Murray Hearts Cinematographer Christopher Doyle

“He’s Irish, but he’s from Australia and he lives in China. I talk about him all the time. The crazy Tourette’s guy. I worked with him on that movie I did with what’s-his-nuts… Jim Jarmusch. It was that one called… ‘The Limits of Control.’ The guy wears platform shoes when he’s working. He can’t talk for 16 seconds without going into a rant. He once told me this crazy story about living in Hong Kong, next to the world’s longest escalator. He’d strip naked in front of his window for everyone to see. But the thing was almost a mile long — the escalator — so by the time people got to the end of it they couldn’t remember what building he was in.” — Bill Murray is kind of obsessed with cinematographer Christopher Doyle. It was rumored that Doyle — who’s incidentally making a Japanese pinku musical — had a major falling out with Wong Kar-Wai after the making of “2046” in 2004 (their last collaboration together). Maybe now we know why? Also, how do we get on the set with this guy? He sounds like a lot of fun. Also. “What’s his nuts.” Amazing. [Blackbook]

  1. On the "The Limits of Control" dvd you can see Doyle with his platform shoes.

It looked like whenever he does handheld stuff he wears the platform shoes (a good 6-9 inches off the ground) and what looked like a weight belt with a giant pillow or bag of sand or something on each side of him. It's the weirdest fucking thing I've seen but his handheld is certainly a trademark and it's pretty unique.

Doyle seems like an asshole, and one who only gets along with certain people. There are shots on the LoC dvd where Doyle seems to be in a tantrum and Jarmusch just kinda deals with it. Obviously the guy is a great DP, but he's also insane.

Also he and WKW patched things up enough to promote the Ashes of Time Redux together.

Weird though how one of the movies Doyle is most associated with, "In the Mood for Love" was mostly shot by Mark Lee Ping-bin and Kwan Pung-Leung.
