Got a Tip?

Bill Murray Confirms Role In ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ & Discusses The Highly-Anticipated Sequel

For months now, we’ve known that pretty much the entire cast of the original “Ghostbusters” was set to return in the upcoming threequel, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” We’ve heard just about every cast member confirm their involvement. Well, except for two — Rick Moranis and Bill Murray. Well, the inclusion of Moranis is still unknown, but in a new report from Vanity Fair, Murray himself confirms that he is taking part in ‘Afterlife.’

Speaking to the outlet during a set visit, Murray obviously confirmed his involvement (otherwise, why else would he be on set?), but he also took the time to help explain just how the original Ghostbusters fit into the new story. Of course, the original foursome, including Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Harold Ramis, won’t all be included, as the latter actor has since passed. And it appears that it’s Ramis’ death that actually plays a role in the film.

“Well, we are a man down. That’s the deal. And that’s the story that we’re telling, that’s the story they’ve written,” said the actor.

Even though it’s been confirmed that the original “Ghostbusters” cast will make an appearance in the film, don’t expect the OG ‘Busters to be the central characters in the film. According to the report, each will have a “meaningful role” but they only had about a week’s worth of shooting, so it’s going to be limited.

As we already know from the first trailer for the film, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” focuses on a new cast, including Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace. And it was the latter actress’ addition to the cast that is special to the film’s director Jason Reitman.

“Before I ever thought I could make a ‘Ghostbusters’ film, the image of a 12-year-old girl carrying a proton pack popped into my head and just wouldn’t leave,” explained the filmmaker. “Eventually, I knew who she was. I’m floored by the idea of what it would be like to find a proton pack in your grandparents’ basement. What would that discovery reveal about who you are and what adventures you’re about to go on?”

And while we are still months away from seeing the film for ourselves, Murray assured that ‘Afterlife’ is worth the wait.

He teased, “The script is good. It’s got lots of emotion in it. It’s got lots of family in it, with through lines that are really interesting. “It’s gonna work.”

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” arrives in theaters on July 10.
