Got a Tip?

Betty Gilpin Reveals She Auditioned For Marvel’s ‘She-Hulk,’ But Was Pregnant At The Time

Betty Gilpin stars in one of 2023’s most odd-sounding series, “Mrs. Davis,” which premieres tomorrow, April 20 on Peacock.  From the creative minds of Tara Hernandez (“The Big Bang Theory”) and Emmy Award-Winner Damon Lindelof (“Lost,” “Watchmen”), the series follows the epic battle between Mrs. Davis the world’s most powerful Artificial Intelligence, and Simone (Gilpin), the nun devoted to destroying Her.

So, it’s a cross between high-concept artificial intelligence sci-fi, and a quest that seems to be built upon an ethical and moral (and spiritual) quest to differentiate between those who are real and have a soul, and those that do not, with a religious fervor to the whole endeavor (read our review).  We’ll have more from that conversation soon, but we recently spoke to Gilpin (known for her Netflix series “GLOW”), about “Mrs. Davis” for our Bingeworthy podcast, which co-stars Jake McDorman, Andy McQueen, along with recurring cast Ben Chaplin, Margo Martindale, David Arquette, and more, and she herself brought up the fact that she auditioned for Marvel’s “She-Hulk: Attorney At Law,” but obviously didn’t get the part.

This is interesting because she was fan-casted quite often by Marvel-ites before the studio eventually landed on Tatiana Maslany. To back up slightly,Gilpin did hint to us that she was fascinated by superhero roles last time we spoke to her for 2021’s “The Forever War,” because they provided a lot of high-stakes melodrama.

“I auditioned for “She-Hulk” while I was like four months pregnant,” Gilpin admitted. “And I was like, ‘Should I do a take where I incorporate that something’s about to ‘Hulk-Out’ of me?’ Then I was like, ‘No,’ because it was at a point where we didn’t know when the pandemic was over, so I didn’t want to discount myself if they’re like, ‘We’re going to be shooting when you’re giving birth.”

Marvel tends to not forget the actors they audition and like. And by the sounds of it, she’s auditioned more than once, so maybe it’s just a matter of time before we see Gilpin in the MCU. More from that “Mrs. Davis” interview soon.
