Got a Tip?

Benedict Cumberbatch Out, Charlie Hunnam In For James Gray’s ‘Lost City Of Z’

nullWell… at least the film is still going forward, right? While we would’ve much preferred Benedict Cumberbatch joining Robert Pattinson and Sienna Miller in James Gray‘s next film, it appears fate had other plans. Well, fate and the scheduling for Marvel‘s "Doctor Strange."

The Wrap reports that Charlie Hunnam will replace the Oscar nominated actor in "The Lost City Of Z." This adaptation of David Grann‘s book tells the tale of English soldier-turned-explorer Colonel Percy Harrison Fawcett (Hunnam), whose obsessive belief that an ancient civilization resided in the Amazon led him on many death-defying expeditions. After financing eventually dried up, Fawcett self-funded one last adventure into the Amazon with his son from which neither returned. Pattinson will play Henry Costin, a British corporal who joins the journey.

No matter what you feel about this casting switcheroo, we’re still getting a new movie from Gray, which is fine by us. Production starts this summer.

  1. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!! He\’s out! It\’s a very good challenge for Hunnam (a James Gray movie!!)
Cumberbatch isn\’t bad but he is so overrated… Just good to do dusty biopics.
Now an amazonian role for Phoenix (he seems to like dirt lately, it would be perfect!) would be so good!

  2. I think Jeremy Renner is a pretty bland actor typically, but he was fantastic in The Immigrant. Perfectly cast. I don\’t have any worries about the cast for this either, though I\’d prefer anything to Cumberbatch

  3. Isn\’t Hunnam somewhat young for the part? Cumberbatch was as well, but I think he\’d be able to play older better. Fawcett was 57 when he disappeared. How old will they have to make Fawcett\’s son?

  4. I understand that Cumberbitches are butthurt, but please, stop trashing other actors. If Hunnam is so terrible, then why is he working with great directors like
    Guillermo del Toro,
Alfonso Cuarón, and Anthony Minghella? And at this point, anyone who criticizes Pattinson is just a troll. He\’s garnered 5 Best Supporting Actor nominations this year for his performances in The Rover and MTTS, he\’s working with the most respected directors and getting excellent reviews. Grow up, move on and stop whining.

  5. I liked the idea of Cumberbatch in this movie, I haven\’t really seen that Hunnam in anything so I can\’t say if the change is for better or worse, though at least the movie will finally be made…hopefully, it was obvious that Benedict\’s schedule was a big problem. I only hope that Pattinson and Sienna will stay and I will be able to finally see this movie.

  6. Hunnam is a terrible actor. So wooden. Add Pattinson to the mix and it\’s a terrible lien up. A shame as Cumberbatch would have been magnificant as Percy.

  7. Hunnam is anything but a hack. He\’s more than proved his acting skills, and frankly, Cumberbatch is overexposed and only likely to be even more overexposed by the time this film is released in 2016. Hunnam is good casting for this very physical role. They\’ll be filming in the jungles of S. America, I had a bit of a hard time seeing Benny in this role, tbh.

  8. We get it. The Playlist hates SOA. Hunnam is fine – he\’s a good actor and given the chance, could really really impress. Cumberbatch isn\’t some great talent that can never be replaced.

  9. Well that\’s a huge bummer man…Cumberbatch was perfect for PHF. And this guy is a hack. I\’m honestly surprised that the film still got financing.
