Benedict Cumberbatch & Jake Gyllenhaal Teaming For ‘Rio’ From ‘Patrick Melrose’ Director

Fresh off the Emmy-nominated success with the series “Patrick Melrose,” director Ed Berger and star Benedict Cumberbatch and decided to reteam for a new film, and they’re bringing along a little-known actor named Jake Gyllenhaal along for the ride, according to a new report from Deadline.

“Rio” tells the story of two friends, who meet again after a long time, in the titular city. Exact plot details are still unknown at the time, but one of the friends is a journalist, while the other is a very successful financier. The film is written by Steven Knight, who is probably best known for his films “Locke” and the upcoming “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.” However, he’s a director in his own right, helming the upcoming “Serenity,” starring Matthew McConaughey. Oh, and he also created the series “Peaky Blinders.” So, he’s definitely a high-quality writer, to say the least.

Cumberbatch is coming off the aforementioned series “Patrick Melrose,” but has also been seen in this year’s mega-blockbuster “Avengers: Infinity War,” as the master of the mystical arts, Doctor Strange. He’ll reprise the role in next spring’s “Avengers 4.”

Cumberbatch and producing partner Adam Ackland say, “We are delighted to be working with Ed Berger again on this very special project. Together with Studiocanal and Nine Stories this promises to be a terrific collaboration, we can’t wait to bring ‘Rio’ to life.”

Gyllenhaal and his producing partner, Riva Marker, also commented, saying they’re “thrilled to be collaborating with [Berger], Studiocanal and SunnyMarch — an undeniably talented group of filmmakers.”

Gyllenhaal has an impressive slate of films coming up this year and in 2019, with “Wildlife” and “The Sisters Brothers” getting awards buzz this year. Next year, he makes his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” He also has the upcoming “Velvet Buzzsaw,” which sees him reteam with his “Nightcrawler” filmmaker Dan Gilroy.

There’s no release date set for “Rio.”
