While rumors have swirled heavily about Benedict Cumberbatch joining the new "Star Wars" series in some capacity (and we suppose it’s still possible), today comes the news that the actor is joining a different blockbuster franchise altogether.
Deadline reports that the actor is in final negotiations for "Doctor Strange." The actors will step into the title role after the long courted Joaquin Phoenix dropped out of contention, and will beat out a number of names mentioned in recent weeks including Keanu Reeves, Jared Leto, Justin Theroux, Oscar Isaac, and Colin Farrell. We have no complaints about the choice, and he seems well suited to take on the role. But we’re sure fans will have their own opinion, so share it below.
Scott Derrickson directs, and "Doctor Strange" will open on July 8, 2016.
Update 12/4: In case there was any doubt, Marvel has confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch is indeed Doctor Strange.
This is a safe but solid choice. By far the best out of all those that were looked at for the role.
That said, there were two other actors suggested by different commenters on several sites that were sadly not in the running.
Ken Watanabe and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
The role of Dr. Strange needs a bit of gravitas.
Watanabe or Ejiofor could have brought that and more.
But, so can Cumberbatch.
Cumberbatch is incredibly ambitious, and he\’s seen what\’s happened to Tom Hiddleston\’s career following his stint as Loki. He loved the attention he got for Star Trek, so this doesn\’t surprise me. He wants those fanboys, a part of a big studio franchise, and then he can do the kinds of films he wants and not have to worry about money.
That\’s Marvel, always playing it safe.
if this is true im going postel.
Know nothing of Dr Strange, but enough on BenC to know it will be good!!
will he have a British accent?
Good choice. I\’m excited since I feel like Cumberbatch is picky with his roles.
lmao. no.
This would be amazing if he plays doctor strange!
Yes!!!
