As David Ayer has reminded us, “Suicide Squad” is an Oscar winner. At this time of year, every movie is a possible Oscar contender until it isn’t, so before you laugh at Disney rolling the dice on “Beauty And The Beast,” you never know what could happen.
The studio has dropped a For Your Consideration trailer for the live action redo of their animated classic. They want Academy voters to consider the movie “in All Categories Including Best Picture,” because, obviously. While the movie wasn’t unanimously loved by critics, it earned $1.2 billion worldwide — that’s right, it’s the biggest movie of the year at least until “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” rolls around. So, it makes sense sense that Disney has some extra cash to toss into an awards season campaign. Here’s the official synopsis:
The story and characters audiences know and love come to spectacular life in Disney’s live-action adaptation “Beauty and the Beast,” a stunning, cinematic event celebrating one of the most beloved tales ever told. “Beauty and the Beast” is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a Beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart of the true Prince within. So, if you’ve already written off “Beauty And The Beast,” maybe its time to catch up with the movie and see what all the fuss is about.

Wasn’t it more of a cash grab? It’s an OK movie, even an OK adaptation of their previous film. But that film was relatively recently released and better than this adaptation. So, if not a cash grab, maybe an ego project? Otherwise I don’t see a reason for this to exist.
