BBC Worldwide and PBS’ Masterpiece Theater are teaming up to jump aboard the reboot train with their take on “Sherlock Holmes.”
As we all know Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law took in a healthy box haul in Guy Ritchie’s loose and bromantic take on the crime-solving duo that will see the sequel shoot this summer. The BBC/PBS version will star Benedict Cumberbatch (“Atonement,” “Four Lions”) as Sherlock and Martin Freeman (UK “The Office,” “Hot Fuzz”) as Watson. The production will be a “21st century spin” on the characters and stories. Meh.
We’re sort of indifferent about this, and we guess as far as marketing goes it’s probably best to drop a new “Sherlock Holmes” television series on the public when the film version is still fresh in their minds. No word yet on when production is scheduled to start.
The BBC's last Holmes was Rupert Everett, and he was pretty rad in the job. Shame they're not extrapolating from that production.
This is from Steven Moffat who wrote the awesome "Jekyll" miniseries and has written what are hands-down the best "Doctor Who" episodes in addition to being a writer on Spielberg's "Tintin" (his involvement makes that project far more exciting). The guy's got the goods, so I think this could be great.
Already in the can. It was filmed during the summer in Wales.
Moffat's wrote the pilot and is Executive producing the series; fellow 'Doctor Who' scribe Mark Gatiss(also of 'League of Gentlemen' and not a bad writer in his own right)is writing the series proper.
They were filming "Sherlock" near where I live. Both Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch were on set.
I chatted to one of the crew members who said it would be on the air in October 2010.
