It goes without saying that when you have former President Barack Obama, along with his wife Michelle Obama, sign an exclusive deal with Netflix, the expectation is that this partnership will result in some special projects. Well, the first of those projects, an Obama-produced documentary, “American Factory,” arrived in 2019 and this morning landed a Best Documentary nomination from the Academy. So, yeah, we’d say that so far, the deal is working out pretty well.
President Obama would agree.

On social media, the former President took to Twitter to talk about the Oscar nomination and congratulate the filmmakers involved with “American Factory.”
Obama tweeted, “Glad to see American Factory’s Oscar nod for Best Documentary. It’s the kind of story we don’t see often enough and it’s exactly what Michelle and I hope to achieve with Higher Ground. Congrats to the incredible filmmakers and entire team!”
For those not familiar with the film, the documentary, directed by Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, tells the story of a factory in the US that finds itself being taken over by a Chinese company. The film shows the clash of cultures between the new Asian ownership and the American workers that have been in the facility for years prior.
As mentioned, “American Factory” is the first film to come from the partnership between Netflix and the Obamas, who run the Higher Ground production company. And if what he says is true, Higher Ground is likely going to stick with projects that promote stories of those that are underserved by the film industry.
No matter what, if they keep producing films like “American Factory,” then we’ll be happy. You can stream the documentary on Netflix now.
