If you’ve seen one teen rom-com, you’ve probably seen enough to know the basic story structure and outcome. Despite some being better than others, most teen rom-coms follow very similar plots. But the new film, “Banana Split,” aims to shake that up by making the relationship at the center of the story between two friends, leaving the boy off to the side.
“Banana Split” tells the story of two girls, April and Clara, that start as bitter rivals but become best friends, as they both share a common love interest, Nick. However, to keep everything great between April and Clara, they can’t talk about Nick or let Nick know that they’re so close, as it would jeopardize their relationship, as well as the potential for keeping Nick in their lives. It sounds complicated, but the film is ultimately sweet, as it’s clear “Banana Split” aims to tell a love story between friends that don’t need to obsess over some hunky boy all the time (though the film has the hunky boy quota filled).
