AYT Documentary Special: Discussing ‘Garry Shandling,’ ‘Wild Wild Country’ & ‘The Devil And Father Amorth’ [Adjust Your Tracking Podcast]

Rule #1 if you’re choosing to tell a story: choose the appropriate medium, the one that tells your story the best…

On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I get lost and attempt to find ourselves in the cult of nonfiction filmmaking. We find rewards, new meaning in our lives, but that’s before things got dark. That’s right, it’s another documentary special episode of the podcast! We start this show off with a few brief thoughts on William Friedkin‘s “The Devil and Father Amorth” but don’t spend too much time on it as it’s kinda, sorta bad as a movie (read The Playlist’s review here). But the story, experience and overall open-mindedness from Friedkin is at least compelling.

The main thrust of this episode is spent celebrating two long-form TV efforts of late, both of which are getting plenty of justified attention: there’s Netflix‘ new six-part, so-easy-to-binge-it’s-scary miniseries “Wild Wild Country,” which represents a high water mark for the form (Playlist review here), perhaps the most impressive doc since “OJ: Made In America” won the Oscar a few years back. Then there’s the new Garry Shandling documentary on HBO by Judd Apatow (it’s great, by the way, far better than this Playlist writer found it, in my opinion). We have lots to talk about with these works, so give a listen and let us know what you think.

Next week we’ll be back with more AYT as we look at two seemingly different films that we attempt to loosely connect under the umbrella of women in crisis movies. They are “Revenge,” a new genre release from NEON that looks intense and stylish (Playlist review here); “Tully,” from Jason Reitman, Diablo Cody and Charlize Theron in a very exciting “Young Adult” reunion (Playlist review here).
