Wow, we weren't expecting this. At all. Thus far, director Derek Cianfrance has shown a proclivity for either soul music (which fills his directorial debut "Brother Tied," which is one of the reasons keeping it from being properly released — the licensing costs are expensive) or indie rock (the Grizzly Bear powered "Blue Valentine," which also featured the rarity "You And Me" by Penny & The Quarters). But Mike Patton? Damn, son.
Today it's been announced that Patton will score Cianfrance's upcoming "The Place Beyond The Pines," which should add an interesting texture to film already brimming with tension. Starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Rose Byrne, Eva Mendes, Ben Mendelsohn, Ray Liotta, Dane DeHaan, Max Martini and Emory Cohen the story centers on Luke (Gosling), a motorcycle stunt rider who turns to robbing banks to support his son, but winds up crossing paths with a police officer-turned-politician (Cooper), kicking off a simmering generational feud that will also include their sons (Cohen and DeHaan) who are mixed up in a clash of their own. And now Patton will provide his always singular musical take on the proceedings.
Patton, who you've likely heard via his many musical projects including Mr. Bungle, Faith No More and Tomahawk, is no stranger to film scores and is something of a movie buff. He provided the backing for "Crank 2: High Voltage" and the Italian film "A Solitude of Prime Numbers," and released via his Ipecac label one of the best Ennio Morricone compilations around, In Crime And Dissonance. And that's not to mention of course, Fantomas, his excellent project whose second album The Director's Cut was an astounding collection of covers of horror theme music.
So yeah, this news rules and has us even further stoked for what will be coming. No release date for "The Place Beyond The Pines," but here's hoping Cannes is just around the corner. As for Patton, a new album by Tomahawk is due this summer.
