The general public still has to wait until Thursday evening to see “Avengers: Endgame.” However, as we get closer to the film’s official unveiling this weekend, we’re starting to get better and better predictions for what sort of box office totals we could be seeing come Monday morning. And it’s not surprising to say that we are likely looking at one big record-breaking weekend.
Deadline is reporting that the best indication that we have so far about just how ridiculous the box office totals are going to be is based on the insane pre-sales data. Previously, we’ve only been reporting things like ‘Endgame’ has sold more tickets than every other movie in pre-sales history. But really, what does that mean in dollars? Well, the report says that ‘Endgame’ has likely sold between $120 million and $140 million in pre-sales. And guess what? Those numbers are only going to go up in the next couple of days, as more and more people purchase tickets and theaters start expanding their screenings.
As a matter of fact, Deadline is also reporting that AMC is doing everything in its power to milk this cash cow for everything it’s worth.
“AMC guests have already purchased more tickets to ‘Avengers: Endgame’ than we’ve ever sold in advance of a film’s release – and our first shows aren’t until Thursday evening,” said Elizabeth Frank, EVP Worldwide Programming for AMC. “With a desire to satisfy as many Marvel fans as possible on Thursday and through the weekend, AMC’s programming team is reviewing ticket sales theatre by theatre and adding showtimes later and later. In fact, there are multiple AMC locations that will be operating around the clock from Thursday night through Sunday.”
You read that right. AMC is throwing out the closed signs this weekend, with “multiple AMC locations” staying open 24 hours a day throughout the weekend. That’s ridiculous. So for all those wondering if the 3-hour run-time for ‘Endgame’ was going to prevent the film from having enough screenings to accommodate a record-breaking weekend, it would appear that the biggest theater chain in the country is willing to do whatever it takes, much like Captain America, to make sure people can see the end of the Infinity Saga.
So, to answer the question, will ‘Endgame’ break the box office opening weekend records? At this point, that seems like a done deal. Of course, when you’re talking about numbers approaching $300 million domestically and $1 billion worldwide in three days, there’s plenty of room for error. But right now, it would seem that Disney and Marvel Studios should probably get those champagne bottles ready because it’s going to be a celebration this weekend.
