It’s not a shocking revelation to say that the box office totals for the upcoming “Avengers: Endgame” are going to be massive. With “Avengers: Infinity War” breaking records on its way to $2+ billion worldwide, the only question surrounding the box office of ‘Endgame’ is really how high the numbers will go. Well, according to one research group, the numbers will be very, very high indeed. Record-breaking, even.
According to research firm Exhibitor Relations (via Bloomberg), “Avengers: Endgame” is not only predicted to outgross ‘Infinity War’ in its opening weekend, but blow it out of the water. And yes, considering ‘Infinity War’ is the current record holder for biggest opening weekend ($258 million), saying that ‘Endgame’ will destroy that number is a stunning prediction.

The research indicates that the fourth ‘Avengers’ film will debut with a weekend domestic box office record of $282 million. Let that sink in for a second. That’s almost $300 million in three days. For a bit of perspective, that opening weekend would be big enough to put it at #7 on last year’s domestic box office charts.
“‘Infinity War’ left audiences with a cinematic cliffhanger,” Jeff Bock, the researcher’s senior analyst, said. “The only thing that could really affect the opening weekend would be a running time that exceeded three hours, which has yet to be confirmed by Disney.” A long movie can mean fewer showtimes..
What Bock brings up here is a great point, and something that shouldn’t be overlooked when trying to predict how big the opening weekend numbers for ‘Endgame’ will be. It’s generally thought that a run-time approaching three hours is a death sentence for a film at the box office. Longer run-times mean fewer screenings per day, which leads to lower weekend totals. ‘Infinity War’ was already pushing the limits with its 2 hours and 40-minute length. But adding another 20 minutes or more (which the directors have been hinting at) could mean that exhibitors just won’t be able to show the film enough for it to break records.
That being said, Marvel Studios would love to break a record in the opening weekend for ‘Endgame,’ but we’re sure the folks behind the scenes will be happy enough with anything approaching ‘Infinity War’s’ totals. Plus, there’s the unknown factor of this ‘Avengers’ sequel coming to theaters only a year after the previous one. Usually, Marvel takes three years between sequels.
Either way, it’s safe to assume the box office for ‘Endgame’ will be incredible. And Disney will have yet another ridiculous money-making year.
