Got a Tip?

‘Avatar’ Surpasses ‘Titantic’ For The All-Time Box-Office Record

The Highest Grossing Film Of All Time!
After only 6 weeks, “Avatar” has broken the worldwide box office record of “Titanic.” The film finished the week surpassing the 13 year record by $50 million. The total now stands at
$1.843 billion and you know it’s only going to grow from here.

But like a baseballer suspected of doing steroids though, just remember, 65% of its overseas box-office and nearly 80% of its domestic earnings come from 3D venues where the ticket price is heavily stacked.

Yay 3D, yeah, fun spectacles. OK, does this mean it’s going to win the Oscar Best Picture too? Yikes, a frightening thought. We think it’s probably inevitable, though that’s a pretty depressing thought.

  1. Of course Avatar has become the highest grossing film of all time. Most of the tickets sold cost around $20. I really wish they'd start going by admissions or something.

  2. Matt,

Stop playing douchbag on the internet. This is an excellent achievement, stop trying to diminish it with nonsense.

The average ticket ISN'T $20. For fewer than 70% of theaters globally (others being in 2D), it's probably three to four dollars. Thus the average mark up is probably $2.50 to $3.00 when compared with other films. That's about 20%. Would you actually consider Avatar to be unsuccessful if it did $1.6 BILLION internationally?

People liked it, get over it. I'm sure it's not a conspiracy against you and your sensibilities.

IMAX theaters, which accounts for the highest prices, only accounts for $130 million of its totals.

  3. It's not like Avatar would even be in the Bottom 3 Best Picture winners from the last 10 Years, so I'm not sure what the groaning is about. 'Best Picture' stopped being an award for the best film of the year decades ago, and now is just a Best Campaign award.

  4. Anon-

I liked Avatar. Did I say otherwise? I'm certainly not trying to diminish its success, as you claim.

I'm just saying that I wish they went by admissions so we can get a more accurate picture of how Avatar stacks up to other films, for example. As it stands, most of the current top-grossing films are from the past 10 years or so (because the price of movie tickets skyrocketed in the past 10-15 years). Of course the grosses of the blockbusters from years past can't hold a candle to today's prices.

I don't necessarily follow your explanation of the mark-ups.

And what's this talk of a conspiracy against me & my sensibilities? What the heck are you talking about it?! I'm so lost. Again, I was a fan of Avatar. I'm not sure what I said that made you think otherwise.

(By the way, it's spelled "DOUCHEBAG.")
