Got a Tip?

‘Atlanta’ Won’t Be Back Until 2018, But FX Looking For More Shows From Donald Glover

Though “Atlanta” is celebrating taking home two awards at the Golden Globes, for Best Comedy Series and Best Actor in a Comedy Series, you’ll have to wait a bit longer for the second season.

In case you forgot, Donald Glover is the new Lando Calrissian in Phil Lord/Chris Miller‘s Han Solo film, which begins shooting this month and will consume much of Glover’s time, pushing the second season of “Atlanta” until 2018. But no need to fear, Childish Gambino fans, as Donald Glover has, additionally, signed a development deal under the network. Under this agreement, Glover will develop and produce a new series for FX.

FX, it seems, has adopted the same creative model they use with Louis C.K. in regards to Donald Glover. Give the creator/director/star as much time as necessary to create a great product while also keeping his other developments in-house. Remember that Louie is also the creator/executive producer of “Baskets” and “Better Things,” both of which air on FX.

These types of longer delays are becoming more common for pedigree series on both cable and streaming services. FX’s “Fargo” took over a year between the first and second season. FX Networks original programming president Nick Grad said, “We have a great luxury in not having a regimented schedule that the broadcast networks have” at the Television Critics Association press tour on Thursday. Also taking a long break and coming back in 2018 is the second season of FX’s “American Crime Story” and HBO’s “Westworld.” [EW/Vulture]
