When you see two prominent, A-list actors sign up for a film from a fairly young, up-and-coming filmmaker, it always makes you take notice. What do these folks see that encouraged them to sign up? Is it the story? Well, in the case of Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who both signed up to star in the upcoming film, “Ash,” it’s clearly due to the chance to work with the filmmaker, Steven Ellison, aka Flying Lotus.
According to The Wrap, Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have joined the cast of Flying Lotus’ upcoming sci-fi film, “Ash.” The film tells the story of two astronauts who wake up on a distant planet to see that the rest of the crew has been brutally killed. As the story progresses, both astronauts start to grow suspicious of the other.

Flying Lotus, aka Steven Ellison, is a hip-hop artist and composer who has released a number of acclaimed albums over the last decade or so. However, in recent years, he’s started to test the waters of filmmaking, with his directorial debut being the experimental anthology, “Kuso,” which was released in 2017. And later this year, he directs a segment in the upcoming horror anthology, “V/H/S 1999.” However, it’s clear that “Ash” is his biggest project to date and will really serve as an introduction for the filmmaker on a larger scale.
“It’s an absolute dream come true to collaborate with some of the most talented actors out there,” Ellison said about “Ash.”
Thompson recently appeared in “Thor: Love & Thunder” and is a mainstay in the MCU. She’s also slated to appear in the upcoming sequel, “Creed III,” opposite Michael B. Jordan. Gordon-Levitt was most recently seen in “Super Pumped,” where he earned acclaim for his lead role. He has a number of roles coming up, including his next appearance in Disney’s live-action “Pinocchio,” where he voices Jiminy Cricket.
“Ash” is written by Jonni Remmler and is produced by Neill Blomkamp and Echo Lake. A start date for production is unknown at this time.
