Jean-Luc Godard has broken cinematic convention, marched by the beat of his own drum, and established a firm place in film history, but there is one thing the 85-year-old director has yet to see happen: becoming a character in a film. But that’s about to change.
“The Artist” director Michel Hazanavicius has signed up to helm “Redoubtable,” a love story centered around Godard. Based on the autobiography “Un An Après” by Anne Wiazemsky, it tracks the relationship that blossomed between the actress and director while shooting his 1967 film “La Chinoise.” They married that same year, and would also collaborate on “Week End” and “Sympathy For The Devil,” but ultimately divorce in 1979.
Louis Garrel (“The Dreamers,” “In The Shadow Of Women“) and Stacy Martin (“Nymphomaniac,” “Taj Mahal“) will take the lead roles, in what is said to be a “light-hearted” film. Pre-production is now underway on the movie which will mark Hazanavicius’ first since his poorly received WWII drama, “The Search.” But hopefully this new project finds him once again working on a movie about the movies, like his celebrated Oscar-winner “The Artist,” so hopefully he’ll be back on form this time around.
