Anthony Mackie just became the official Captain America of the Marvel Cinematic Universe earlier this year, but for one of his upcoming projects, it appears he’s turning in the shield and instead embracing the post-apocalypse in the upcoming “Twisted Metal” series.
According to Variety, Anthony Mackie has signed on to star in the upcoming Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions series, “Twisted Metal.” If you’re a fan of late-‘90s video games, you probably know “Twisted Metal,” which tells the story of people who are offered the chance to have any wish granted as long as they win a deadly game of destruction derby. However, the TV series looks to take things in a bit of a different direction.
The report claims that Mackie will star as John Doe, a man given the chance to have a better life if he agrees to transport a mysterious package across the post-apocalyptic wasteland. The only problem? He’s going to be facing off against a bunch of psychopaths in cars that are out to kill him, including an evil clown in an ice cream truck named Sweet Tooth.
As mentioned, this isn’t the first TV rodeo for Mackie. This year, he’s already starred in the aforementioned Marvel Studios streaming series, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” Previously, he also starred in Season 2 of “Altered Carbon” for Netflix. He’s not afraid of tackling genre projects and seems perfectly suited for them.
No release date has been set for “Twisted Metal.” The series is written by Michael Jonathan Smith, who will also produce alongside “Deadpool” writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
