With “WandaVision” wrapping up this week, all eyes are turning towards Anthony Mackie and his upcoming “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” as the next project being popped out of the Marvel Studios money printing factory. But unlike “WandaVision” and the future of the Scarlet Witch, not much is known about where Falcon is going to end up at the end of the upcoming series. Will he be the new Captain America, which seems to be a given? Will there be a Season 2? What’s the next film that Sam Wilson aka Falcon aka possible Cap is going to show up in? Don’t look at Mackie for those answers.
Speaking to Variety in the outlet’s profile of the actor, Anthony Mackie confirmed that there have been no discussions about a possible Season 2 of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” Of course, we shouldn’t necessarily expect each Marvel Studios series to get a Season 2 right away. Kevin Feige has said before that some of the series will lead into films (such as “WandaVision” leading into “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”), while others will stick around and have more episodes in the future.
So, if there’s no Season 2 in discussions, surely Mackie’s Falcon/Captain America is going to show up in a future Marvel Studios film, right? Well, according to Variety, the actor doesn’t know if his character has a future in the films, either. All that to say, the future of Falcon seems to be in a bit of limbo.

Of course, whenever we talk about actors in the Marvel Studios teasing a future (or lack thereof), we should take all comments with a nice sized grain of salt. We have to assume that Mackie has a decent idea of where Falcon goes next. We also have to assume that he’s not going to immediately spill the beans before his series airs. So, maybe it’s more of a “wait and see” sort of tease than a “Falcon is being booted out of the MCU” scare. Smart money is on that assumption.
In the interview, Mackie does explain that he did have some hesitancy with the idea of jumping to TV for one of the first Marvel Studios Disney+ series.
“I didn’t think we could do on the television what we’d been doing on the big screen,” he explained. “I didn’t want to be the face of the first Marvel franchise to fail. Like, ‘See? We cast the Black dude, and now this shit is awful.’ That was a huge fear of mine, and also a huge responsibility with playing a Marvel character.”
Without immediate Marvel plans, Mackie has his eyes on a completely different type of film.
“My team gets mad at me for saying this, but I would love to do a cheesy old-school ‘When Harry Met Sally’-type of project,” he said. “One of those movies where I’m working outside and have to take my shirt off because it’s too hot. I want a romantic comedy. I want to do every movie written for Matthew McConaughey that he passed on.”
“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” debuts on Disney+ on March 19.
