In 2015’s underseen “Mississippi Grind,” co-writers and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck produced a charming story of a couple of down-on-their-luck gamblers played by Ben Mendelsohn and Ryan Reynolds. It’s a delightful little movie about addiction and the challenge of overcoming your demons, and until now, it was the biggest step forward in the career of its two filmmakers.

Now they’re playing on a whole new level. According to a new report in Variety, the co-directors of “Mississippi Grind” will be tackling “Captain Marvel,” their upcoming superhero film starring Brie Larson as the iconic Marvel character. As Variety notes, Marvel had met with several directors about the project to ensure that they were on the same page as the studio, but it seems that Boden and Fleck have won out. This will also make fans of the character happy, as Marvel has followed through on its promise to bring a female director to the franchise.
