If you’ve ever wondered what a contract renegotiation sounds like, well these latest comments from Andrew Garfield should be a guide. Even though Sony has already spun a web of plans all the way through to “The Amazing Spider-Man 4,” which has a release date set for May 4, 2018, to hear it from Andrew Garfield, he’s not going to go the distance as Peter Parker.
“I mean I’m under contract for another one after this… as far as a fourth one? That’s not anything to do with me,” he said to Yahoo! (via SuperHeroHype). “But yeah, I think what we’re doing here is we’ve established the world. And now we get to really play inside that world.”
So, does this mean Garfield is gonna hang up the suit? Yeah, we kind of doubt it. You don’t spend hundreds of millions of dollars establishing an actor and character only to swap him out for the fourth installment. Just wait a year or two, and stand by for Garfield to use the old “I-really-like-where-they-took-the-character-so-I’m-glad-to-return” routine, as Sony backs up a dump truck full of money in front of his house. And perhaps Garfield is learning from the master of this kind of denial: Hugh Jackman.
Again, even though Fox has formally announced they are pressing ahead with “The Wolverine 2“—not to mention building a big comic book movie-verse—Hugh Jackman continues to shrug his shoulders whenever talk of a followup comes up. “I don’t know whether or not I will do this next movie. I am really proud of this movie and I am excited to develop something with Jim Mangold from the beginning because that is a great ride,” he told Vanity Fair. “That’s exciting, to see what we come up with but I have a very high expectation of what it would need to be and if it doesn’t reach those, I won’t be doing it.”
In short: whatever dudes. We’re willing to put money on the fact they’ll both be back, it’s just a matter of their agents making sure they get the most bang for their superhero buck.
Well it's obviously time for the Spider-Man reboot. The current one is really long in the tooth.
