‘Andor’: Diego Luna Confirms That New Disney+ Show Is The Last Time He’ll Play The Character

The first three episodes of Tony Gilroy‘s “Star Wars” series “Andor” premiere on Disney+ today, to much anticipation. In the lead-up to the show, Gilroy said “Andor” would be a creative pivot from earlier Disney+ “Star Wars” fare, and advance reviews of the series confirm that. Our review‘s headline calls it an “engaging spy thriller about tyranny” and a series geared for adults. So, if you hoped “Andor” would be a grimmer, more serious approach to a galaxy far, far away, congratulations: the show looks to be all that and more.

But it remains to be seen if “Andor” sustains its initial momentum through its already confirmed second season. And even if that’s the case, there’s a limited shelf life for Cassian Andor as a character: it’s hardly a spoiler at this point, but he dies at the end of “Rogue One.” So, no surprise that Diego Luna confirmed that “Andor” will be his final performance as the character. In an interview on EW‘s “Star Wars” podcast, “Dagobah Dispatch,” Luna said, “For me, this is it. It’s a beautiful journey now that I have 24 episodes, 24 shorter films, to tell the story of where Cassian comes from and how he got to be the man we met in “Rogue One.””

But what about if Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm want to backtrack with Andor for a prequel series? “No, impossible,” said Luna. “It would have to be someone else, man. I’m not getting any younger, so it definitely would have to be someone else.” Luna’s stance is a little ironic, especially since he considered the possibility of an Andor-centered sequel when he was shooting “Rogue One.” “I would be lying if I tell you that I never thought of it,” Luna continued. “Obviously I did think of it, and we made so many jokes on set on what the possibilities were of coming back. And obviously one was going on a prequel, but I never thought of it as a real chance.”

If anything, Luna said that knowing it was his last performance as Andor helped his performance. “It does have a beginning and an end,” continued Luna. “Therefore, I can understand it and I can enjoy the ride and kind of picture the aim we have. I think that’s needed, otherwise you’re always working to get somewhere else. I don’t think that way. All those people and coaches that tell people, ‘Oh, picture yourself in 10 years, where you want to be. Project that and work for that.’ That’s nonsense. Worry about what you’re doing today. Do it the best way you can. Enjoy the ride. Make sure you give the most, and you give everything you have. And something cool will happen if you do that. And, if not, the journey was worth it. So it’s about now, the moment.”

And, for better or worse, Diego Luna’s moment as Cassian Andor has passed; or at least it will once Season 2 of “Andor” wraps shooting. The first three episodes of “Andor” are on Disney+ now.
