Some people adore his films, others detest his films and the man himself. (Likely for good reason.) Wherever someone may fall with their opinions on him, one thing is certain about David O. Russell: Somehow, time and time again, he attracts the most celebrated and talented actors of Hollywood with whatever he works in. Spanning the likes of “Three Kings,” “The Fighter,” and Academy Award winner “Silver Linings Playbook” and beyond, Russell has quite the extended career. Heading to theaters this Fall is “Amsterdam,” the newest feature from the writer and director. After an initial trailer for the film was released in July, a second look at the film is here to offer a further, more detailed glimpse.
Akin to some of his most recent films, such as “American Hustle” and his last film “Joy” from 2015, the upcoming “Amsterdam” is a period piece, this time set in the 1930s. The core plot of the film focuses on three friends, a doctor, an attorney, and a nurse, played by Christian Bale, John David Washington, and Margot Robbie, respectively, accused of murder. Looking at the origins of their friendship in wartime, as well as the mystery of their accused crime, the film is supposedly a mixture of real-world events as well as good old-fashioned movie myth-making. Regardless of how “Amsterdam” may turn out, whether it sees praise and commercial success or gets buried in the forthcoming barrage of other prestigious films scheduled to release later this year, there seems to be a notable amount of effort being put behind it.
Starring an ensemble cast of Bale, Robbie, Washington, Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Zoe Saldana, Mike Myers, Michael Shannon, Timothy Olyphant, Andrea Riseborough, Taylor Swift, Matthias Schoenaerts, Alessandro Nivola, Rami Malek, and Robert De Niro. (Take a good minute to just look at that cast again.) Originally set for a November release, “Amsterdam” now opens in theaters on October 7. Watch the new trailer below.
