Netflix has become known as a company that is willing to produce films and TV series that might not be able to find an audience on another platform. This creative freedom that is afforded filmmakers has paid dividends with projects that seemingly push the limits of their respective mediums. Another streaming project that seems to do that is the upcoming “American Son.”
As seen in the first teaser for “American Son,” the film is based on the play of the same name and tells the story of an estranged couple that must reunite at the police station to help locate their missing son. Now, what separates this film from being your typical “Ransom”-esque, paint-by-numbers thriller is the social commentary present in the plot, with the film following an interracial couple and their missing mixed-race son, as well as the way that the film was shot, clearly echoing the idea that this was based on a play, with the teaser seemingly pointing to the film taking place in limited numbers of locations.

The film stars Kerry Washington, Steven Pasquale, Jeremy Jordan, and Eugene Lee. The film adaptation of “American Son” is directed by Kenny Leon. The director is probably best known for his Broadway work, including earning the Tony Award for Best Director for the recent “A Raisin in the Sun.”
“American Son” is set to be released on Netflix on November 1.
