Got a Tip?

AMC Theatres Announces New Subscription Service To Compete With MoviePass

AMC is finally taking a stand against MoviePass.

The massive theater chain has had enough of MoviePass taking all the subscription service money. They’ve announced a new venture, dubbed AMC Stubs A-List, to compete with the highly-controversial MoviePass (via Slash Film).

There are some differences between AMC’s new subscription service and those offered by its biggest competitor. Instead of the $9.95 price point, Stubs A-List will cost consumers $19.99 a month. That $20 will allow subscribers the opportunity to see three movies a week at any AMC theater in the US. A big bonus is that those movies can include IMAX, Dolby Cinema, RealD 3D, Prime, and Big D. MoviePass doesn’t cover those screenings.

And since there’s a ton of AMC ticketing infrastructure already in place, members of the Stubs A-List will be able to book their tickets online, including selecting seats where available. Subscribers will also get savings on ticketing fees and concessions. Perhaps most convenient of all, the Stubs A-List doesn’t require a credit card, as the service will be based in the AMC app and website.

For months now, the theater industry has been waiting for AMC or another major chain to take their shot at MoviePass. The young start-up has been making waves over the last year, signing over 2 million customers and expanding at a rate that has business insiders nervous. However, with AMC, there’s the aforementioned infrastructure, as well as the financial backing to ensure that MoviePass is now involved in a fight for survival.

We’ll have to see if/when MoviePass has a response. While the price difference is significant, there are some major bonuses to the AMC plan that MoviePass just can’t compete with. And considering financial reports claim that MoviePass might already be struggling, this might just be the deathblow.
