Many people will tell you that making a TV show about a pandemic while in the middle of a pandemic is a bad or even dumb idea, and those people would be right. Turns out, even Amazon Prime has realized this, as they just canceled the remake of “Utopia” after just one season.

The show was written by “Gone Girl” author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn based on a cult favorite UK show from 2013 of the same name, and it followed a group of young adults who meet online and begin getting mercilessly hunted down by a deep state organization after they get their hands on a mythical graphic novel. The novel tells of conspiracy theories that may prove true, and its pages can predict real-life catastrophes and epidemics, including a viral pandemic that is currently threatening the planet. You know, pure science-fiction.
This may be a case of the wrong show getting released at the worst possible time, or it could be a case of the remake not being nearly as good as the original even if our own reviewer thought “Utopia” was good deconstruction of comicbooks. For those who want to scratch their sci-fi itch, Amazon just renewed the sci-fi drama “The Expanse” for a sixth and final season, so at least they’re not walking away from the genre entirely.
Though “Utopia” was sadly not a great show, it had a fantastic cast that included John Cusack in his first series-regular TV role, Rainn Wilson, Desmin Borges, Dan Byrd, Ashleigh LaThrop, Jessica Rothe, Javon Walton, Christopher Denham, Cory Michael Smith, Sasha Lane and Farrah Mackenzie
