Got a Tip?

Amanda Seyfriend & Evan Rachel Woods Have A ‘Thelma & Louise’ Musical In The Works With The Film’s Screenwriter On Board

Amanda Seyfried wasn’t in attendance for her Golden Globe victory on Tuesday Night for her role as Elizabeth Holmes in Hulu‘s “The Dropout.” However, “Yellowstone” stars Mo Brings Plenty and Cole Hauser, who accepted the award on Seyfried’s behalf, hinted that she’s “deep in the process of creating a new musical.” Variety now has the scoop on that project. It may be a musical version of “Thelma & Louise” Seyfriend is workshopping with Evan Rachel Wood.

A “Thelma & Louise” musical has reportedly been developing since 2021, with the 1991 film’s screenwriter Callie Khouri attached. But there are other names beyond Seyfriend, Wood, and Khouri o board, too, like singer/songwriter Neko Case writing the score. Additionally, “Dear Edward” author Haley Feiffer writes the musical’s book. Theater director Trip Cullman is also on board the musical.

Few ’90s films are as iconic as “Thelma & Louise.” The film stars Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon as two friends on the run after shooting and killing a man who tried to rape them. Khouri won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the film, with the movie earning six Oscar noms in total. The movie also stars Harvey KeitelMichael Madson, and a young Brad Pitt in his first major role.

Seyfried’s Golden Globe win comes after winning an Emmy for “The Dropout” last year. The actress confirmed the reason for her absence from the Golden Globes ceremony in an Instagram video on Wednesday, but didn’t specify it was for a “Thelma & Louise” musical. “I am in New York,” Seyfried said in the video. “I was on FaceTime with my “Dropout” team, my wonderful “Dropout” team who are the reason I got this award. It is a true honor to have been a part of that. I had to miss it because I am doing something that is magic and it’s a musical. So I’m finally getting to do something that I’ve never really done. That’s all I can really say about it. Hopefully more soon. But it’s a lot of work. It’s more fun, and it’s been a great night. So in lieu of any acceptance speech I’m just going to say thanks to all my “Dropout” family and my family.”

Seyfried has previous musical experience, starring in “Mamma Mia!” and “Mamma Mia 2.” As for Evan Rachel Wood, she has a little experience in that department too, with performances in the Beatles musical “Across The Universe,” and singing for her role as Anna and Elsa’s mom in “Frozen 2.” But will “Thelma & Louise: The Musical” ever see the big stage? Only time will tell, but it looks likely given all the big names involved.
