With the Oscars nearing its close, Alfonso Cuarón has taken home the year’s Best Director Oscar for “Roma.” The film has been a beloved favorite of critics since its premiere at the Venice Film Festival back in August. Since then, the film’s momentum has built, leading it to 10 nominations this evening, with wins that seem to keep adding up.
Cuarón is no stranger to the Oscar stage. The director earned his first Oscar nomination in 2003 with his film “Y Tu Mamá También” for Best Original Screenplay. In 2007, Cuarón earned another nomination for Screenplay – on the Adapted side – as well as a nomination for Best Achievement in Film Editing for his film “Children of Men.” It was seven years later when Cuarón would win the Oscar for Best Director for the film “Gravity.” The win marked a moment in history as Cuarón became the first Mexican filmmaker to win the coveted Oscar.
In the years to come, Cuarón would celebrate the Best Director wins of friends and fellow filmmakers Alejandro González Iñárritu, winning for 2015’s “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” and 2016’s “The Revenant.” Along with Iñárritu, Cuarón celebrated last year’s Best Director win for Guillermo del Toro, the director’s first win and nomination in the category.
With “Roma” Cuarón relates a story of memory. Basing the film off of the story of his families’ maid, the filmmaker wrote the original screenplay, worked as the director of photography and produced the film. Cuarón poured himself into every minute detail of the film and captured something special. The win also marks a huge moment for streaming service Netflix who distributed the film. Cuarón has adamantly advocated for the streaming platform that gave him the opportunities he was looking for with “Roma.” Cuarón’s next directorial effort will star Casey Affleck and is working under the title “Ascension.” The project is currently in development. Cuarón director will serve as producer for a number of films in the near future, but until those projects are brought to fruition, audiences can see his latest masterpiece on Netflix.
