While Sam Mendes just released his Oscar-nominated “Revolutionary Road,” in December, the prodigious filmmaker already has another film in the can called, “Away We Go,” starring John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph that we included in one of our Most Anticipated Films of 2009 lists.
Co-written by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida, based on the trailer released yesterday, many seem to be calling this a romantic comedy or lumping it in with the “hipster film” clique that includes ‘Eternal Sunshine’ and “The Darjeeling Limited,” but that seems like an incredibly shallow and superficial reading to us.
It looks like an indie drama with a comedic bent. Why people feel the need to tag it to the “Little Miss Sunshine”s of the world (and even “Juno” which it looks nothing like) is beyond us and a little annoying. We could be wrong, but it smells like a much different creature with more dramatic and a sad, melancholy feel and Mendes is a director much more interested in the truths of human interactions than he is in twee, feel-goodery. Again, we could be wrong, but it feels like Focus Films is wisely just marketing the film like that (which again is smart, always play to the familiar with a trailer).
As per usual, people are asking us what the music in the trailer is. Well, British-born indie folkie, Alexi Murdoch has written the film’s score according to the trailer credits and it showcases his song, “All My Days,” from his 2006 debut album, Time Without Consequence (the song was also featured on an episode of “The O.C.”).
The film also stars Jeff Daniels, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Allison Janney, Catherine O’Hara, and Paul Schneider and comes out in limited release via Focus Films on June 5th. Here’s the trailer.

Haven’t heard any of Murdoch’s work til now, and I’m sure it’s been said before but he sounds very inspired by the late Nick Drake.
Do you actually have confirmation that Murdoch will be doing the score? You guys seem to regularly assume that the music in the trailer is going to be the same as the finished film. That is usually not the case. My guess is Thomas Newman as he’s scored all of Mendes’ pictures thus far.
@McKenzie. The trailer says, “music by Alexi Murdoch”
The exact same way the Revolutionary Road soundtrack said, “music by Thomas Newman.”
Right on. (hangs hang for speaking out of turn…) 🙂
anyone have the script yet?
i have it, but you’d have to trade me for something i need. email me.
