Alex Ross Perry is definitely a filmmaker that doesn’t like to be put in any sort of box. His early films were these odd, but really fun, comedies like “The Color Wheel” and “Listen Up Philip.” Perry came back with “Queen of Earth,” which is a thriller. He’s also a credited writer on the recent Disney film, “Christopher Robin.” And just last week, his punk rock musical drama “Her Smell” hit theaters. Comedy, thriller, family film, and a musical drama. What’s left to do? Well, according to a new report, Perry has decided to add horror to his filmography.
Variety is reporting that Perry has signed on to write and direct the film “Rest Stop,” based on a short story from none other than Stephen King. As you might gather from the title, the film follows the story of two women and their encounter at a rest stop. Of course, since this is a King story, we can only assume that chaos and horrific things ensue.
Perry has been very busy over the past decade, writing, directing, producing, and starring in films. He’s also a major proponent of indie, DIY filmmaking and will readily discuss how you don’t need a big budget to make your film dreams come true. And when he’s not out there talking about indie films or directing his own features, Perry will take the time to work on something like a music video, which he recently did for AJ & Aly.
As we’ve been reporting for the last couple of years, anything and everything written by Stephen King is getting adapted for film or TV. Thanks to a resurgence in popularity following 2017’s “It: Chapter 1,” Hollywood has been aching to rush out every bit of King material it can get its hands on. Recently, “Pet Sematary” hit theaters and we’re expecting the next “It” later this year. Then there’s the sequel to “The Shining” novel, “Doctor Sleep.” Other works like “Gerald’s Game,” “The Dark Tower,” and “Mr. Mercedes” have all been recently adapted, as well. Basically, throw a rock and you’ll hit a King adaptation that was recently released or in development.
There’s no release date for “Rest Stop.”
