Filmmaker James Kent is probably best known for his work on the 2014 film, “Testament of Youth.” However, since then, the director has worked mainly on the TV side of things. But Kent is back with his big-screen follow-up “The Aftermath,” and he’s brought on an incredible cast to tell the story of post-World War II Germany.
“The Aftermath” stars Keira Knightley as Rachael Morgan, the wife of a British colonel that is given the job of helping rebuild the devastated city of Hamburg, Germany. As seen in the trailer, Rachael’s relationship with her husband is a bit rocky, to say the least. Things are further complicated when the British colonel decides to let some unexpected guests stay with them in the massive house they are living in currently. Rachael must figure out how to deal with her troubled relationship, as well as her blossoming feelings for the German widower she now shares a home with.
Joining Knightley in the cast are Jason Clarke and Alexander Skarsgård, as Rachael’s husband and the German widower, respectively. “The Aftermath” is executive produced by Ridley Scott and is written by Joe Shrapnel, Anna Waterhouse, and Rhidian Brook. The latter of which is the author of the novel the film is based on.
“The Aftermath” will hit theaters April 26, 2019.
Here’s the synopsis:
THE AFTERMATH is set in postwar Germany in 1946. Rachael Morgan (Keira Knightley) arrives in the ruins of Hamburg in the bitter winter, to be reunited with her husband Lewis (Jason Clarke), a British colonel charged with rebuilding the shattered city. But as they set off for their new home, Rachael is stunned to discover that Lewis has made an unexpected decision: They will be sharing the grand house with its previous owners, a German widower (Alexander Skarsgård) and his troubled daughter. In this charged atmosphere, enmity and grief give way to passion and betrayal.
