Critics and audiences have anticipated South Korean director Kogonada‘s follow-up to his 2017 feature debut “Columbus” since that film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival that year. Now, “After Yang” following its premiere at Cannes 2021, and the recent 2022 Sundance Film Festival, Kogonada’s lastest is almost upon us.

Based on the short story “Saying Goodbye To Yang” by Alexander Weinstein, Konogada’s new film is a futuristic family drama centered around a daughter’s favorite android.

Here’s the official synopsis:
When his young daughter’s beloved companion — an android named Yang — malfunctions, Jake When his young daughter’s beloved companion — an android named Yang — malfunctions, Jake (Colin Farrell) searches for a way to repair him. In the process, he discovers the life that has been passing in front of him, reconnecting with his wife (Jodie Turner-Smith) and daughter across a distance he didn’t know was there.
“After Yang” stars Colin Farrell (‘The Batman‘), Jodie Turner-Smith (‘Queen & Slim‘), Justin H. Min (Netflix’s ‘The Umbrella Academy‘), and Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja (‘iCarly‘). Haley Lu Richardson, who co-starred in “Columbus” for Kogonada, returns to work with the director again in a supporting role. Sarita Choudhury (‘Evil Eye‘), Clifton Collins Jr. (‘Breaking News In Yuba County‘), and Ritchie Coster (HBO Max’s ‘The Flight Attendant‘) round out the main cast.
Along with writing and directing credits, Kogonado also serves as editor on “After Yang.” Benjamin Loeb, who recently photographed Jesse Eisenberg‘s directorial debut “When You Finish Saving The World,” is the film’s cinematographer.

“Columbus” was a critic’s favorite back in 2017 and landed on several Top 10 lists for the year and by all the buzz and acclaim so far, “After Yang” looks like it’ll likely receive a similar glowing reception. The indie lands in theaters March 4, 2022, via A24. Watch the first trailer here.
