Shailene Woodley Attempts To Survive The Harsh Seas In ‘Adrift’ Trailer

With a starring role in “Snowden,” a recurring role as Jane Chapman on the HBO show “Big Little Lies,” and the lead in the upcoming film, “Adrift,” Shailene Woodley has accomplished the extremely difficult: the 26-year-old actor has joined good company with Daniel Radcliffe and Jennifer Lawrence, and successfully outgrown and shed her Y.A. roots, where she starred in the unfinished “Divergent” series of films. Her “Adrift” co-star, Sam Claflin, also has a Y.A. background, as Finnick Odair in the “Hunger Games” franchise. However, as seen in the new trailer, even with no Y.A. connection, “Adrift” is just as ambitious as the respective stars’ blockbuster past.

Here’s a quick synopsis for the film:

“Adrift” is based on the true story of two avid sailors who set out on a journey across the ocean. Tami Oldham (Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Claflin) couldn’t anticipate they would be sailing directly into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. In the aftermath of the storm, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins. With no hope for rescue, Tami must find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved.

“We have an aggressive budget,” said producer Ralph Winter, “but it will still be tough — everyone relaxing at the beaches, the islands are quite rural and we have to deal with various tribes to get to waterfalls, and even tribal rights on the open ocean in various areas where we might disturb their fishing or farming of pearls.”

Adrift was almost a “The Spectacular Now” reunion, as Miles Teller was originally meant to play the role of Richard Sharp, but he dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, leaving the role to Claflin.

“The Sea and The Ocean” director Baltasar Kormákur helms the STX Entertainment-released steamy survival thriller. It hits theaters June 1, 2018.
