Adam Scott Says ‘Party Down’ Movie Will Shoot Next Summer, If Schedules Can Be Worked Out

Exclusive: Many a prematurely-canceled TV show lives on in hope of resurrection on the big-screen. This is partly due to the success of “Star Trek,” originally a low-rated three-season TV show that became Paramount‘s biggest franchise after the success of “Star Wars“. Very occasionally, it happens; Joss Whedon‘s cult sci-fi TV show “Firefly,” became the Universal movie “Serenity,” although the film didn’t catch on with many beyond fans. But more often, there’s a lot of talk, but very little action — even Annyong‘s agent has given up hope of an “Arrested Development” movie ever happening.

The latest show to join the graveyard of sorely missed series is Starz‘s cult comedy “Party Down,” and the last year or so has seen the cast and key crew members slowly start to mention the possibility of a movie. We’ve been a little skeptical at the prospect of it happening in the past, but there does seem to be some real momentum behind it, something reinforced when we spoke to the show’s star Adam Scott in Toronto, in an interview focused on his new film “Friends With Kids.”

Scott said, “We’re like 90% there, we’re hoping to do it maybe next summer, if everyone’s schedules work out and the guys get time to write a script,” he told us. “They have kind of a skeleton of a story worked out so we know where it’s going to go but we just have to kind of cross the t’s and dot the i’s, or something. But Starz are being super cool and they’re going to let us do it, and we’re all excited, we all want to do it.”

Of course, replace the words ‘Starz’ with ‘Fox‘ and this could be, verbatim, something that Jason Bateman or Michael Cera have said over the years about “Arrested Development” over the years. And with Scott and Lizzy Caplan, among others, on the rise fast, those scheduling problems could be tricky — Scott already has one film, the comedy “A.C.O.D,” planned for his “Parks & Recreation” hiatus in the spring. We imagine that crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s means “getting financing” as well, no easy feat necessarily. But there’s a willingness there, and eyeing a start date is a big leap in the right direction.
